Family Fun at the Craft Fair: Engaging Your Children in the Experience

Neighborhood craft fairs can be a family affair!

First, get exercise as a family and walk around passing out fliers and postcards. I hauled my daughter around in a wagon, then later had her run ahead and thrust fliers under mats or in doors.

Second, a sale like a craft fair or garage sale is a great opportunity to teach your kids about money such as making change, counting up your sales, calculating percentages, etc.

Have your littles help you make cookies, lemonade or hot cocoa to sell at the craft fair (depending on the weather). My nephews helped my mom make big batches of cookies that we sold for $1 for a set of two. They got a percentage of the proceeds and my mom had a lot of fun! We made chocolate mint cookies, peanut butter kiss cookies and thumbprint cookies. Also, I made my family-famous sea salt caramel chocolate marshmallows.

Do your children have old toys or books they’re not using anymore? My nephews gathered a collection of books, toys and stuffed animals and sold them for quarters. They had a nice little kids’ store going at the front of our craft fair. Youngsters who came by with their parents loved getting treats and toys while their parents shopped for Christmas presents!
